If you’re buying a firearm, you’ve got quite a few options, from registered dealers to gun shows. You may even have a local Joplin area pawn shop that carries pre-owned guns. Not only can pawn shops provide guns at generally discounted prices, they can be a great source for antique guns and other rare or difficult-to-find items.

If you are considering buying a gun from a licensed pawn shop (like Galena Liberty Pawn) keep reading!

Research The Places You’re Considering

Whether you’re buying online or in person, be sure to do some research on who exactly is selling you the gun. This is easiest when you already know the person, but that is not always the case.

Don’t just stop there on your research. Google the shop you’re interested in buying at and see what their online presence looks like. Do they have good reviews on Google and Facebook? Do they have an up-to-date website with relevant contact information? These are important things to know before heading into the store.

Know The Fair Price

Fortunately, we live in a time when information is quite literally at our fingertips. There are plenty of online resources where you can investigate the price range for a specific gun. Get a good idea on a fair price range for the specific item you’re interested in so that when you begin shopping around, you can negotiate to get the best price.

Examine The Gun Carefully

There’s nothing inherently bad by purchasing a used firearm – in fact, buying used can even get you an incredible deal. However, it’s important to examine the gun as thoroughly as you are allowed.

  • Are there any signs of wear and tear, such as damage to the bolt, a non-functioning slide release, adjustable sights that won’t adjust, etc.
  • Is it customized? Look for any modifications on the gun, and decide – do those modifications make the gun any more or less desirable?
  • Does the trigger stick? If the seller allows, you can dry fire the gun a few times to see if there is any sort of trouble with the trigger. Eject the magazine and rack the slide to test those common problem areas as well.
